What Is A Wireless Network Adapter?

iDockUSA provides access to the Internet via wireless network technology.  At one end of the network is the Internet.  At the other end of the network is you and your computer.  The Internet and the network are always running.

How does your computer connect to the network?

Your computer connects to the wireless network via a wireless network adapter.  The network adapter serves two functions.  First, it transmits and receives data by connecting to the wireless network using a built in "radio".   The card also interprets the data transmission and makes is possible for the computer to "adapt" to the network.

What kind of network adapter do I need?

There are a variety of network adapter devices and most of them meet the IEEE 802.11b/g standards.  Any adapter cards that are WIFI compliant should work on our system.  Other brands such as Cisco, Netgear, D-Link, Linksys, Siemens and Symbol all work on iDockUSA's system.

There are several types of network adapters.   Some xxamples are shown below.

Do I need anything else besides a network adapter?

Depending on your boat's location relative to our antenna and/or the material that your boat is made of, it may be necessary to purchase a small booster antenna. Only about 15% of our customers find it necessary to have an antenna.  The antenna looks like the cellular phone antenna that externally mounted to your car window. The only difference is this antenna is not permanently mounted but mobile.

Can I install the equipment myself?

Absolutely.  Most of our customers install the network adapter themselves.  Installation instructions and software comes with each device.  Manufacturers also offer phone support when required.
