Recommended Computer Settings For Microsoft XP
 

Turn Off File & Print Sharing
Turn On Firewall

Turn Off File & Print Sharing

Since your computer is on a network, it is highly recommended that you turn off Microsoft's network "File & Print Sharing".  With this feature off, other network users will not be able to access your computer's files and printer.  Follow the following instructions.

Locate on your desktop's system tray (lower right corner), the double computer icon. Locate the icon that reflects ths wireless connection.  Right click on this icon.

You will see the following window.  Click on the "Properties" button.

Below is the properties window.  Move the elevator on the white window down to until you find the "File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks" item.  Uncheck the item to turn it off.

You have completed turning off file and print sharing.

 

Turn On Firewall

It is also advised to turn on the built in firewall software.  From the same properties window (as above), click on the "Advanced Tab".

Check the box "Internet Connection Firewall" and DO NOT check the "Internet Connection Sharing" box.  

Hit OK until you have returned to your desktop
