Help - iDockUSA Network FAQ

How does iDockUSA's network work?

iDockUSA utilizes recent advances in wireless computer networks.  The technology is known as 802.11 or as WiFi.  This technology is used in offices to link computers together.  It is also being used to distribute the Internet to computers in public spaces such as airports, coffee shops and other locations where the public desires to have an Internet connection.  These public networks are commonly referred to as a "Hot Spots".  You can learn more about 802.11 technology and their use in Hot Spots at http://www.80211-planet.com/

Hot Spots are being created throughout the country to allow users to access the Internet. iDockUSA has created a Hot Spot in the marinas allowing boaters to browse the Internet and send/receive e-mail.

How fast is iDockUSA's network connection?

Fast.  iDockUSA offers download speeds that are many times faster than traditional dial-up.  Each iDockUSA customer shares in the available bandwidth which varies by marina.  iDockUSA customers will experience download speeds in excess of 200 kilobytes per second (at times speeds will be 1 megabit per second).  As our customer usage grows, so does the available bandwidth.

How far away can the signal transmit, can I use this service while at sea?

No.  Unfortunately, the signal only transmits approximately 2500 feet.  Our antennas are typically located at the marina office.  If you have clear line of sight and if all the stars and moons line up perfectly, the signal will transmit about 5000 feet.

Can you roam to any iDockUSA site?

Yes.  Once a customer of iDockUSA, you are able to roam to any iDockUSA marina.  To find out where iDockUSA marinas are located, click here.

Can you use your iDockUSA subscription on any computer?

Yes.

Can you log in with two different computers at the same time?

No.  You can only use one computer at a time.

How secure is my connection?

As it has been reported in the media, the Internet is not a secure network to be transferring sensitive information.  A wireless network only makes the data transfer more unsecure since data is transported in part over a wireless connection making it easier to capture.  It is recommended that you read more about wireless network security.  iDockUSA has two FAQ's about security on the Help Desk page.  Every user on the Internet must be educated about secure data transfers so please consult with a professional about your particular circumstances.

What is iDockUSA's User policy and Customer Agreement?

Can any 802.11 network adapter work on our network?

Yes.  All manufacturers that have certified there products are WiFi compliant will work on any 802.11 network.  However, many networks are closed and require authentification. iDockUSA requires you to be a customer before accessing our network.

Can you send and receive iDockUSA e-mail on other Internet connections?

Yes.  If you have an iDockUSA e-mail address (i.e. yourname@iDockUSA.com) you can access the mail server from any Internet connection.  You do not have to be on our wireless network to access your e-mail.
